Sam Wells: A Time for Theology. What religion can contribute to the public square.

Op dinsdagavond 17 juni 2025 houdt dr. Samuel Wells een publiekslezing.

We maken met elkaar grote veranderingen door, niet alleen geopolitiek en economisch. Het is merkbaar dat democratische instituties onder druk staan. Er is behoefte aan vernieuwing. Meer dan ooit voelen mensen ook een persoonlijk appèl: wat kan ik als gewone burger doen? Kan ik ergens aan bijdragen?

Sam Wells is één van de belangrijke Europese theologen en daarnaast predikant van St. Martin-in-the-Fields in Londen. Hij heeft een scherp afgestelde antenne voor de uitdagingen van de moderne samenleving die zowel seculier als multireligieus is. Onvermoeibaar bepleit Wells het belang van verhalen, van verbeeldingskracht en van improvisatietalent. Daar ontbreekt het vaak aan in de samenleving, zegt hij, terwijl religies daarin juist veel te bieden hebben. Wat kan vandaag je inbreng zijn, als individuele gelovige en als religieuze gemeenschap? Wat mag een stad en een overheid van gelovigen verwachten? Die vraag is extra interessant omdat de klassieke ‘scheiding van kerk en staat’ nieuwe doordenking nodig heeft. De Amsterdamse gemeenteraad heeft het College recent opgedragen hier initiatief in te nemen.

De publiekslezing is een initiatief van Citykerk en van de Waalse Kerk, beide in Amsterdam. Stadspredikanten Tim Vreugdenhil en Joost Röselaers zijn moderatoren. Aansluitend op de lezing is er ruim gelegenheid om vragen te stellen aan Wells.

Het programma is geheel Engelstalig en vindt plaats in de Waalse Kerk, Walenpleintje 159, nabij Metrostation Waterlooplein en Metrostation Rokin. Inloop vanaf 19.45u, start om 20.15 en einde plenaire deel om 21.45 uur.

Entreeprijs is 15,- euro, inclusief koffie/thee vooraf en borrel achteraf.

We are going through major changes together, not only geopolitically and economically. It is noticeable that democratic institutions are under pressure. There is a need for renewal. More than ever, people also feel a personal appeal: what can I do as an ordinary citizen? Can I contribute to something?

Sam Wells is one of the leading European theologians and also pastor of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London. He has a sharply tuned antenna for the challenges of modern society that is both secular and multi-religious. Wells tirelessly advocates the importance of stories, imagination and improvisational talent. These are often lacking in society, he says, while religions have a lot to offer in this area. What can your contribution be today, as an individual believer and as a religious community? What can a city and a government expect from believers? This question is particularly interesting because the classic ‘separation of church and state’ needs new reflection. The Amsterdam city council recently instructed the Executive Board to take the initiative in this regard.

The public lecture is an initiative of Citykerk and the Waalse Kerk, both in Amsterdam. City preachers Tim Vreugdenhil and Joost Röselaers are moderators. Following the lecture, there will be ample opportunity to ask Wells questions.

The programme is entirely in English and will take place in the Waalse Kerk, Walenpleintje 159, near M Waterlooplein and M Rokin.
Admission from 19:45, starts at 20:15 and ends plenary session at 21:45.
